South African Airways (SAA) has issued a Request for Quotation for a service provider to assist with the removal of electronic waste and other hazardous substances from its premises nationally. This is an urgent opportunity for accredited e-waste management companies.
Tender Overview and Key Dates
The RFQ, numbered GSM049/2026, was published on 13 July 2026, with quotations closing on 15 July 2026 at 16:00 . Scope of Work
The appointed service provider will remove electronic waste and hazardous substances from SAA premises, including lithium batteries and items containing lithium-ion batteries. The service provider must have offices at all domestic airports or be affiliated with organisations that do, specifically at:
- Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International Airport and Airways Park)
- Durban (King Shaka International Airport)
- Cape Town (Cape Town International Airport)
- Gqeberha (Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport)
The service provider must be capable of collecting all e-waste, ensuring its proper disposal, and supplying certificates of destruction. This service should be performed at no cost to SAA.
Mandatory Requirements
Bidders must meet the following mandatory requirement:
- eWASA Accreditation or equivalent: The bidder must be accredited, licensed, or recognised by the e-Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA) or an equivalent recognised industry or regulatory body for the collection, transportation, recycling, treatment, or disposal of electronic waste. Valid documentary proof in the form of an accreditation certificate, licence, audit confirmation, or other official documentation must be submitted.
Evaluation Process
The evaluation follows a five-stage approach:
- Step 1 – Administrative Responsiveness: Evaluation of returnable documents
- Step 2 – Substantive Responsiveness: Evaluation of mandatory returnable documents
- Step 3 – Technical Functionality Evaluation: Minimum threshold of 70%
- Step 4 – Price and Specific Goals: Price (80 points) and Specific Goals (20 points)
- Step 5 – Business Award: Post-tender negotiations and Letter of Award
Technical Functionality Criteria
Bidders must achieve a minimum of 70% on technical functionality. The evaluation includes:
- Decommissioning Process (60%): Data removal from devices and e-waste disposal certificates
- E-Waste Categories (40%): Capability to collect, recycle and dispose of computers, laptops, mobile phones, printers, scanners, cameras, networking equipment, lithium batteries, speakers, cables, routers, and televisions

Points will be awarded for:
- B-BBEE Level 1 and 2 (10 points)
