The National Cleantech Innovation Challenge (NCIC) has opened applications for its Gauteng Smart Mobility Cleantech Challenge, a flagship initiative under South Africa’s Just Transition to the Future programme. Hosted by the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, this opportunity targets digital innovators with post-proof-of-concept software solutions that address Gauteng’s urgent mobility challenges—from crippling congestion and high household transport costs to fragmented public systems and carbon emissions. Selected innovators will gain support to pilot and scale their solutions in one of Africa’s most dynamic urban economies.
Applications are open now at https://ncic-sa.org/gauteng/.
Tackling Gauteng’s Mobility Crisis with Digital Cleantech
Gauteng’s transport system is under severe strain. Johannesburg commuters lose an average of 141 hours per year to traffic, while 60% of households spend over 10% of their income on daily travel. The sector remains heavily reliant on private vehicles and an informal minibus taxi network that lacks integration, real-time data, and digital payment infrastructure. The NCIC seeks digital-only cleantech innovations that can bridge formal and informal systems, reduce emissions, and improve equity—without relying on hardware or physical infrastructure.
What Solutions Are Sought?
The challenge prioritises scalable, software-based innovations in five key areas:
- Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platforms that unify formal and informal transport options
- Real-time data and analytics tools to map, measure, and optimise the informal transport economy
- Intelligent traffic management systems using AI and predictive modelling to reduce congestion and enhance pedestrian safety
- E-mobility enablers, such as digital platforms for equitable EV charging access and grid resilience
- Digital payment and routing systems tailored for minibus taxis and low-income users
All solutions must be beyond the idea stage, with evidence of prototyping, testing, or early deployment.
Who Can Apply?
The call is open to:
- South African startups, social enterprises, and tech teams
- University-affiliated innovators with spin-out potential
- International applicants in partnership with a South African registered entity
Applicants must demonstrate:
- A digital-only cleantech solution (no hardware)
- Post-proof-of-concept maturity
- Commitment to local job creation, skills transfer, and scalability in Gauteng
- A clear environmental and social impact metric
Early-stage concepts, academic papers, and hardware-dependent proposals will not be considered.
Support and Impact Pathway
Selected innovators will receive:
- Access to pilot environments in Johannesburg and surrounding municipalities
- Technical and business mentorship from Tshimologong and NCIC partners
- Opportunities for investment linkage and policy engagement
- A platform to influence urban mobility policy and regional replication
This is not just a competition—it’s a launchpad for systemic change in African urban mobility.
