The Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (LDARD) has officially opened its Call for Applications for the 2025/2026 Farmer Support Funding. This pivotal initiative is designed to bolster the agricultural sector by providing critical support to a wide spectrum of farmers, from subsistence growers to large-scale commercial producers. With the application window open from 16 September to 16 October 2024, this is a vital opportunity for producers to secure resources for growth and sustainability.
This funding program is a cornerstone of LDARD’s strategy to enhance food security, stimulate economic development, and create employment within the province. By addressing key bottlenecks in production, the department aims to unlock the vast potential of Limpopo’s agricultural landscape.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
The call is inclusive and targets all categories of active agricultural producers:
- Subsistence Farmers: Those farming primarily to feed their families.
- Smallholder Producers: Individuals or entities with an annual turnover between R50,000 and R5 million.
- Commercial Producers: Medium-scale (R5m – R20m turnover) and large-scale (R20m+ turnover) operations.
- Organised Farmers: Registered cooperatives, associations, and commodity groups acting on behalf of their members.
What Support is Available?
The funding covers a comprehensive range of needs, categorized into three primary areas:
- Production Inputs: Direct support with essential items for daily operations, including:
- Poultry: Day-old chicks, point-of-lay pullets, feeds, and medication.
- Crops & Horticulture: Seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides for vegetables and fruits.
- Livestock: Feeds, medication, and breeding stock for intensive production systems.
- Mechanization Support: Services and subsidies to improve efficiency and scale.
- Mechanization Services: Soil preparation, planting, fertilizer application, and spraying (up to 10ha).
- Mechanization Subsidy: Support for the procurement of tractors and related implements.
- On and Off-Farm Infrastructure: Investment in long-term assets to build resilience and add value.
- Examples include irrigation systems, packhouses, poultry houses, piggeries, storage facilities, tunnels, and processing facilities.
Key Eligibility Criteria
Prospective applicants must meet several non-negotiable criteria to qualify:
- Be a previously disadvantaged South African citizen, 18 years or older.
- Possess secure land tenure or valid land use rights (e.g., title deed, lease agreement of至少10 years for infrastructure).
- Public servants and their spouses are not eligible to apply.
- For activities requiring it, proof of water use license application or authorization must be provided.
- Compliance with relevant legislation (e.g., National Water Act, environmental laws) is mandatory.
The Application Process and Requirements
Applying is a detailed process that requires careful preparation. Applicants must:
- Download the official application form from the LDARD website: www.ldard.gov.za.

- Proof of land ownership or lease.
- Tax clearance certificate (SARS compliant).
- Bank statements and proof of market arrangements.
- A resolution authorizing the signatory to apply on behalf of the entity.
Selection and Scoring Process
Due to limited funds, not all qualifying applications will be successful. Submissions will be scored against a weighted criteria system that prioritizes:
- Equity: Applications from designated groups (youth, women, people with disabilities) receive additional points.
- Economic Viability: Projects must demonstrate a clear path to profitability and limited future dependence on government support.
- Value for Money: The potential for job creation, agricultural output, and return on investment is critical.
- Preparation: Applicants with proof of own contribution, solid market agreements, and good financial and production records will score higher.
