The SAB Foundation invites applications for its renowned Tholoana Enterprise Programme, a unique 18-month journey designed to empower entrepreneurs with the ambition to build bigger, stronger businesses. This initiative targets business owners who are committed to learning, adapting, and strengthening their leadership to drive sustainable growth and job creation . Programme Overview
The Tholoana Enterprise Programme is one of the SAB Foundation’s flagship initiatives, providing a continuous journey of support for entrepreneurs and social innovators . Since its inception, the programme has supported over 679 entrepreneurs and invested R282 million, creating a significant impact on the South African economy . It is designed for entrepreneurs who already have viable businesses with paying customers and recurring revenue but need tailored support to scale effectively.
Eligibility Criteria
- South African citizen working full-time in the business
- Majority shareholder and key decision-maker
- Business at least 51% black-owned and managed
- Business registered and operating in South Africa
- Traded consistently for at least two years
- Paying customers and recurring, verifiable revenue
- Demonstrate repeat demand for products or services
- Viable business model with credible growth opportunity
- Willing to commit to the full 18-month programme
Priority consideration is given to businesses owned by women, youth, and persons with disabilities, as well as businesses based in or meaningfully serving rural and township communities.
What Tholoana Offers
Over 18 months, participants receive tailored business support based on their specific needs and challenges. This includes practical business skills development through workshops, financial management support, one-on-one mentorship, and access to market readiness interventions.

- Five dynamic business-skills workshops
- Ongoing one-on-one mentorship (up to four hours per month)
- Financial management support to ensure investment readiness
- Market readiness interventions including brand building and sales tools
- Access to resources in legislation, compliance, and business development
- Peer-to-peer community and networking opportunities
- Mental health and wrap-around support
Programme Impact and Success Stories
The most recent cohort (TEP16) demonstrated the programme’s transformative power, with 52 entrepreneurs creating 191 jobs and achieving an 82% increase in turnover . Graduates like Infomedia report significant growth in revenue, assets, and valuable business connections, leaving the programme with stronger systems, clearer strategies, and greater confidence to scale.
