The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) has issued a tender for the supply, installation, commissioning, and validation of three identical fume cupboards for the UCHEM Crystal Waste Project at Pelindaba. This is a specialised opportunity for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with experience in nuclear or high-containment environments.

Project Background and Purpose
The fume cupboards are required to treat crystal waste undergoing physical transformation from solid to liquid. The waste is radioactive and exhibits highly acidic and alkaline characteristics that are actively corroding existing metal drums . These primary containment systems are essential for neutralising, conditioning, drying, and stabilising the material.
Scope of Supply and Technical Requirements
The scope includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, commissioning, and validation of three identical fume cupboards to be installed adjacent to one another at Necsa, Pelindaba. Each cupboard serves a specific function: neutralisation using 5 L containers; blending, mixing, and drying; and sampling and packaging of conditioned waste. The design must comply with ASHRAE 110-2016 and EN 14175, and be fabricated from corrosion-resistant polypropylene .
Prequalification and Functionality Criteria
Bidders must meet the following mandatory requirements:
- Submit a compliance statement confirming they comply with the scope of work
- Provide a detailed project plan and time schedule
- Submit valid ISO 9001 certification in the name of the OEM
- Submit a valid COIDA certificate
- Provide a statement confirming a 12-month guarantee certificate will be issued
To qualify for further evaluation, bidders must score a minimum of 80 out of 100 in the technical/functional evaluation. The 80/20 preference point system will apply for price and specific goals.

Special Conditions and Documentation
The work will be carried out in a radiological area, and contractor employees will undergo radiation worker training. Bidders must submit a completed POPIA Data Processing Agreement and comply with Necsa’s SHEQ policies and procedures. All lifting and rigging equipment used inside the facility may become contaminated and must be left behind.
