Are you a food safety innovator looking to transform Africa’s informal food economy? FoodSafety4Africa is offering catalytic funding of up to R1 million per project to support at least 10 innovative solutions that directly address pressing food safety challenges across the continent.
Why This Opportunity Matters
With millions relying on informal markets for daily food, the safety of that food is a public health concern. This programme aims to address these challenges by accelerating innovations that make food safer and supply chains more transparent.
What Kind of Innovations Are They Looking For?
Projects should aim to make a tangible impact in one or more of the following areas:
- Mycotoxins: Reduce contamination caused by toxic fungi.
- Pesticide residues: Find alternatives or improve detection and control.
- Traceability & authentication: Develop solutions that prove food safety and origin.
- Adulteration & microbial contamination: Prevent harmful tampering and improve hygienic practices.
- Weak value chain channels: Create stronger, safer food networks and systems.
Who Can Apply?
This opportunity is open to:
- Startups and SMEs
- Research institutions and tech innovators
- Single entities only (no joint ventures or consortiums)
- Applicants must be legally registered in one of the eligible African countries listed below.
