The Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA), in partnership with the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, invites spaza shop owners in the Gert Sibande District to attend a crucial outreach session on 4 August 2026 at the Mkhondo Local Municipality Town Hall.
This outreach programme forms part of a nationwide campaign to help informal food retailers formalise their businesses and access the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund. The session will run from 10:00 to 12:00 and offers direct engagement with SEDFA representatives who will provide practical guidance on application processing, business compliance, and available support services.
Understanding the Spaza Shop Support Fund
The R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund was launched to strengthen the informal economy by supporting South African-owned spaza shops in townships and rural areas. The fund aims to help businesses formalise, improve competitiveness, and contribute to local economic development.
Funding Details:
- Qualifying businesses can receive up to R100,000 per shop
- Funding above R50,000 is provided as a 50% grant and 50% loan
- Support can be used for stock purchases, infrastructure upgrades, shelving, refrigeration, security systems, and point-of-sale devices
- Non-financial support includes business skills training, digital literacy, credit management, and regulatory compliance assistance

How to Apply
The application process is handled through SEDFA and the National Empowerment Fund. Spaza shop owners can apply directly to SEDFA by completing an application form and submitting it with all supporting documents to spaza@sefa.org.za . Applications can also be submitted in person at the nearest SEFDA office.
It is important to note that applications are only processed through official channels. Government has warned spaza shop owners to be cautious of individuals or organisations claiming to assist with applications in exchange for fees. No upfront payments or administration fees are required to guarantee approval.
