The National Research Foundation, through the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), invites qualified service providers to submit quotations for essential roof repairs at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory in Gauteng. This critical infrastructure project covers approximately 2,020 square metres across Geodesy, Electronic/Mechanical, Reception/Library, and Control Room sections at Farm 502JQ, Broederstroom Road, Krugersdorp District.
Key Scope (Areas total ~2,020 sqm):
- Removal and disposal of old bitumen sheeting
- Surface sloping with roof cement for drainage
- Supply & install 4mm “Derbigum SP4” fully bonded waterproofing
- Crack repairs, concrete edge repairs, bitumen weatherproof painting
- Core drilling for blocked drainage & painting of roof steps
- OHS Safety File submission
Compulsory Briefing Requirements
Bidders must attend a mandatory briefing session on 21 May 2026 at 11:00 AM SAST at the observatory site. Attendance is non-negotiable; failure to participate will disqualify your submission. Bring safety boots and a visibility vest for the site component.
Technical and Safety Compliance
The scope includes removal of old bitumen sheeting, surface preparation with roof slope cement, installation of 4mm Derbigum SP4 waterproofing, crack repairs, concrete edge restoration, and application of weather-proofing paint. Bidders must submit a comprehensive SHE file, COIDA Letter of Good Standing, risk assessments, method statements, and proof of competent personnel appointments.
Mandatory Functionality Requirements
- COIDA Letter of Good Standing
- Public liability insurance (min. R2 million)
- Minimum 4 reference letters on similar completed tasks
- Valid CIDB certificate: Grading 2SN
- Valid NHBRC registration
- Proof of 5 years’ experience in similar projects
Preference Points and BBBEE
The RFQ uses the 80/20 preference point system: 80 points for price and 20 for B-BBEE status level contribution. Submit a valid B-BBEE certificate or sworn affidavit to claim preference points. Non-compliant contributors score zero for this category.
