The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in partnership with the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA), has launched the Energy Industry Support Programme (EISP)—a strategic initiative designed to empower Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) operating in or seeking to enter South Africa’s dynamic energy sector. Through free capacity-building workshops and specialised technical incubation services, the EISP aims to bridge critical skills gaps, accelerate innovation, and position SMMEs as key contributors to the country’s just energy transition.
The programme is fully funded by CSIR and EWSETA. Selected participants will only be responsible for personal costs such as travel, accommodation, and data. Applications are open year-round via the official CSIR portal.
Empowering Energy Entrepreneurs Through Targeted Capacity Building
The EISP’s Capacity Building Programme offers a one-week intensive training course tailored for SMMEs at any stage of engagement with the energy sector. Participants gain practical insights into:
- Value chain analysis of renewable energy technologies
- Viable enterprise development opportunities in solar, wind, storage, and efficiency
- Financial modelling, project finance, and business case development
- National and provincial energy policies, regulations, and SMME-specific procurement pathways
Priority is given to women-owned businesses and enterprises led by persons with disabilities, in line with national transformation goals.
Advanced Technical Incubation for Established Energy SMMEs
For SMMEs already active in the energy space but facing technical or R&D constraints, the Technical Incubation Services provide hands-on support from CSIR’s Energy Research Centre. This stream is designed for post-startup enterprises offering products or services in renewable energy who require expert guidance in:
- Technology validation and prototyping
- System integration and performance optimisation
- Compliance with technical standards and grid codes
- Scalability and commercialisation strategies
Applicants undergo a rigorous screening process based on innovation potential, market readiness, and alignment with South Africa’s industrialisation objectives.
Strategic Alignment with National Development Goals
The EISP directly supports the National Development Plan (NDP), the Just Energy Transition (JET) framework, and the CSIR’s mandate to drive inclusive economic growth through science, technology, and innovation. By strengthening SMME capabilities, the programme fosters local manufacturing, job creation, and participation in green economy value chains—particularly in underserved and rural communities.
This public-private partnership between CSIR and EWSETA exemplifies a coordinated effort to build a resilient, skilled, and competitive energy ecosystem in South Africa.
How to Apply and Programme Accessibility
Participation in both streams of the EISP is free of charge. Interested SMMEs must apply through the official CSIR website:
Applicants should prepare basic business information, a brief description of their energy-related activities or interests, and contact details. Selection is ongoing, with training cohorts and incubation cycles scheduled throughout the year.
