The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD), in partnership with the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Sedfa), has officially re-launched the Asset Assist Programme, offering qualifying Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) a unique opportunity to secure non-repayable grant funding of up to R250,000. This initiative is designed to empower entrepreneurs with the tools they need to scale their operations, improve productivity, and drive sustainable growth. Applications open on 05 December 2025 and close on 09 January 2026 at 23:59.
Programme Overview and Grant Objectives
The Asset Assist Programme provides financial support for the acquisition of machinery, equipment, working capital, and raw materials. The grant is intended to address critical operational gaps that hinder business expansion, particularly for enterprises that lack the capital to invest in essential assets. A key condition is that no more than 20% of the total grant amount may be allocated to raw materials and stock—ensuring the majority of funds are directed toward durable, value-adding assets.
This programme is part of the DSBD’s broader strategy to stimulate job creation, promote economic inclusion, and support the formalisation of South Africa’s vibrant informal sector.
Eligibility Criteria for South African MSMEs
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be South African-owned MSMEs registered with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC)
- Be tax compliant with SARS
- Be sole proprietors or registered companies (co-operatives are excluded)
- Have an annual turnover of R1 million or less
- Not have previously received funding through this specific programme
All qualifying MSMEs—including those who applied in previous rounds but were not selected—are invited to re-apply. This is a first-come, first-served opportunity, so early submission is strongly advised.
