ECDC Invites Film Producers to Apply for Production Funding | Apply Now

Eastern Cape, South Africa – The Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) has issued an open call for production companies and producers to apply for the Eastern Cape Film Investment Fund. This funding initiative supports film and television projects that will be shot in the Eastern Cape, aiming to promote the province as a premier film and television destination.

Funding Opportunities and Categories

The fund offers two distinct funding streams for productions shooting in the Eastern Cape:

  • Micro Film Fund: Supports short films, documentaries, and short TV formats with funding of up to R150,000 per project.
  • Production Funding: Supports feature films, series, reality TV, animation, and documentaries with category-specific funding caps as detailed in the guidelines.

Eligibility and Mandatory Requirements

Applicants must meet strict criteria to qualify:

  • Registered company or Special Purpose Corporate Vehicle (SPCV)
  • Tax compliant with a valid tax clearance
  • Brief project synopsis and updated CV of the applicant
  • Distribution or commission agreement from reputable entities or broadcasters
  • Secured major budget (more than 50%) before applying to ECDC
  • Minimum of 14 calendar days of principal photography in the Eastern Cape
  • 100% of the budget secured prior to commencing principal photography
  • Projects must start within 3 months of ECDC approval
  • Valid B-BBEE Certificate (Level 1 to 3) or affidavit
  • South African production company registered and compliant with CIPC

Application Submission

Completed application forms and supporting documents must be submitted in Word or PDF format to film@ecdc.co.za and llanga@ecdc.co.za. Applications submitted via Google Drive, WeTransfer, or other links will not be accepted. The fund requires applications within six weeks before the start of shooting dates in the Eastern Cape.

Evaluation and Governance Process

All applications will follow ECDC’s rigorous internal governance process and will be evaluated based on budget availability, economic impact, and budget required. Applications will undergo commercial viability assessment, due diligence, and document verification. Companies with incomplete projects previously funded by ECDC will not be considered.

Closing Date and Enquiries

The closing date for applications is 31 March 2027. For enquiries, contact 087 131 1426 or email film@ecdc.co.za. Only successful applicants will receive communication from ECDC through approval letters. If you do not hear from ECDC within six weeks after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.
