The National Research Foundation (NRF), operating through its scientific facility iThemba LABS, has issued Request for Quotation iLABS/RFQ 2026/27:23 for the procurement, fabrication, delivery, and installation of expandable trellis security gates. This Western Cape-based opportunity targets specialized security manufacturers capable of delivering robust commercial-grade access control solutions for critical research infrastructure.
Scope of Work and Technical Specifications
iThemba LABS requires a horizontally sliding folding (“scissor action”) gate to be fitted into a reveal measuring 1455mm wide by 2565mm high. The contractor shall provide a complete system including all structural components, locking mechanisms, fixings, and finishes necessary for a fully functional installation.
Locking System Requirements:
- Slam lock (auto-locking)
- Key-operated hook or deadlock
- Locks shall be tamper-resistant
- Minimum two locking points
Finishes:
- Standard duty with polyester powder coating
- Coating thickness: minimum 60–80 microns
- UV resistant and corrosion resistant
- Colour: Black
- For coastal environments: aluminium construction or enhanced corrosion protection required
Warranty:
- Minimum 12-month warranty on materials and workmanship
- Warranty shall cover structural defects, lock failure, and folding action malfunction
Mandatory Requirements (Non-submission May Lead to Disqualification)
Bidders must submit:
- Completed and signed SBD 4 (Bidder’s Disclosure)
- Completed pricing schedule (or an official/formal quotation)
- CSD Summary Report (www.csd.gov.za) – registration on the Central Supplier Database is compulsory
- B-BBEE Certificate as accredited with SANAS or Sworn Affidavit (if claiming specific goals points)
- SBD 6.1 (Preference Points Claim Form) – South African companies only
Mandatory Compliance and Evaluation Criteria
Bidders must be registered on the National Treasury’s Central Supplier Database (CSD) to be eligible for contract award. The procurement falls under the 80/20 preferential procurement system. Quoted prices must be firm, inclusive of VAT, and remain valid for at least 60 days from the closing date.

Submission Guidelines and Delivery Timelines
