The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has issued an open tender (WCGHWSC0006/1/2026) for the provision of a comprehensive catering service at Khayelitsha District Hospital. This strategic three-year contract aims to deliver high-quality, nutritious, and safe meals to patients, aligning with South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines and provincial meal plan specifications.

Mandatory Site Inspection and Briefing

Attendance at the compulsory information session and site inspection is strictly mandatory. Failure to attend will invalidate the bid.

Scope of Work – Comprehensive Patient Catering

The successful bidder will provide a full catering service across 13 service areas (including Medical Wards, Surgical Wards, Mental Health Ward, Maternity, Paediatric Ward, Overnight Ward, Trauma Outpatients, and Acute Psychiatric Unit).

Menu requirements (compulsory for bid evaluation – failure invalidates offer):

  • Proposed 2-week (14-day) cycle menu for winter and summer for all diets (normal and therapeutic)
  • Standardised recipes for normal and therapeutic meals
  • Complete nutritional analysis of all normal and therapeutic menus

Therapeutic meal guidelines (provided in bid document):

  • High protein / High energy diet
  • Low residue / Light diet
  • Diabetic diet (8,400 kJ) with Glycaemic Index table
  • Full/Mixed fluid diet – Clear fluid diet
  • Soft diet – Renal / protein-restricted diet (60g)
  • Psychiatric diet (1½ times a full diet)
  • Pureed diet for babies (6-12 months)
  • Toddler diet – Paediatric diet (3-6 years)
  • Snack meal for triage patients

Bidder Eligibility and Experience

Prospective bidders must demonstrate at least three years of experience in public sector or hospitality catering. Only reputable service providers with proven capacity to supply high-quality meals to facilities with a 300-bed capacity or similar will be considered. Valid CSD and WCSD registrations are required.

Submission Guidelines and Deadline

Sealed bid documents must be deposited in the designated Department of Health bid box next to the Cape High Court at the junction of Dorp and Keerom Street, Cape Town.
