The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP No: HSRC 2026/25) to appoint a visual artist to create compelling illustrations for its academic outputs. The project focuses on visually interpreting the Theory of Change (ToC) and up to eight research briefs under the Youth Futures Portfolio in Dignified and Fulfilling Work in Africa, supported by the Mastercard Foundation. The goal is to translate complex social science insights into accessible, engaging visuals that support dialogue, reflection, and policy engagement.
Scope of Work and Deliverables
The selected artist will produce:
- One draft and one final high-resolution illustration of the Theory of Change
- Up to eight full-page illustrations for individual research briefs (4–12 pages each)
- Print-ready files in A3 and A0 formats
- Digital versions suitable for presentations and online dissemination
Illustrations should be hand-drawn in style—playful yet professional—with strong visual storytelling that conveys pathways, assumptions, and recommendations without relying on heavy text. The aesthetic must feel open and iterative to encourage annotation and discussion, especially during workshops and conferences.
Timeline and Key Activities
The Theory of Change assignment runs from May to August 2026, including participation in an in-person workshop in Stellenbosch (4–7 May 2026). Research brief illustrations will be developed between July 2026 and July 2027. The artist must be available throughout this period and hold a valid passport, as travel to Kenya for a conference may be required (travel costs covered by HSRC; no compensation for time or lost income).
Submission Requirements
Proposals must include:
- A portfolio demonstrating relevant experience in visual storytelling or academic illustration
- A conceptual approach to interpreting the ToC and research content
- CV and proof of tax compliance (SARS PIN or clearance certificate)
- Completed Standard Bidding Documents: SBD 4 (Declaration of Interest) and SBD 6.1 (Preference Points Claim Form)
All submissions must be emailed to mmagoleng@hsrc.ac.za by 16:00 on 15 April 2026. Late or incomplete bids will not be considered.
Evaluation and Scoring Criteria
Proposals will first undergo a functionality assessment (minimum 75/100 points required) based on artistic merit, understanding of the brief, and project management capability. Qualified bidders will then be scored using the 80/20 preferential procurement system: 80 points for price competitiveness and 20 points for empowerment criteria (Black, women, youth, or disability ownership).
