The United Nations Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) has launched its Global Social Innovation Challenge 2025, a dynamic initiative designed to identify and accelerate transformative solutions that are reshaping the future of global tourism. With tourism contributing 10.4% of global GDP and supporting 319 million jobs worldwide, the sector stands at a critical crossroads—balancing economic opportunity with environmental stewardship, social inclusion, and cultural preservation.

This challenge invites startups, scaleups, innovative MSMEs, and tourism-focused organizations to submit groundbreaking ideas in three core categories: Community-based Tourism, Inclusivity & Accessibility, and Green Projects. The initiative aligns with UN Tourism’s mission to foster a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable tourism ecosystem that delivers value for people, planet, and prosperity.

About the UN Tourism Global Social Innovation Challenge

Launched in partnership with Plug and Play Tech Center and supported by academic and industry leaders, the challenge seeks to spotlight innovations that address pressing global issues—from climate change and rural marginalization to accessibility gaps and biodiversity loss. Selected finalists will gain a global platform to pitch their solutions at the UN Tourism Tech Adventures in early 2026 and join the UN Tourism Innovation Network, unlocking pathways to investment, mentorship, and real-world implementation.

Three Focus Areas Driving Sustainable Tourism Transformation

  1. Community-based Tourism: Solutions must empower local communities—especially women, youth, and rural populations—through inclusive economic models, agrotourism, cultural heritage preservation, and creative industries like gastronomy and crafts.
  2. Inclusivity & Accessibility: Innovations should break down barriers for travelers with disabilities, seniors, and those with specific access needs through assistive technologies, universal design, and inclusive service models.
  3. Green Projects: Proposals must advance environmental regeneration—reducing carbon footprints, enabling circular economies, improving energy efficiency, or supporting conservation in protected areas such as biosphere reserves.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility and Target Innovators

Applicants must demonstrate an innovative, scalable, and sustainable solution with clear alignment to the tourism sector and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While a minimum viable product (MVP) is preferred, advanced-stage concepts with strong business plans and growth potential will also be considered. Ideal candidates leverage technology, community engagement, or novel business models to create measurable social and environmental impact.
