The Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) is inviting innovators, researchers, SMMEs, industry partners, and indigenous knowledge-holders to submit Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the commercialisation of indigenous knowledge-based skin and personal care innovations.

This initiative is designed to transform publicly funded research and development (R&D) into tangible, market-ready products that can enhance South Africa’s global position in the cosmetics and wellness industry. By fostering collaboration between academia, small businesses, and traditional knowledge systems, the call represents a unique opportunity to unlock new technologies, stimulate local economic development, and drive innovation rooted in African heritage.

Purpose and Objectives

The call aims to:

  • Encourage participation from innovators, researchers, SMMEs, industry partners, and technology transfer offices holding indigenous knowledge-based intellectual property (IP).
  • Promote the commercialisation of publicly funded R&D in South Africa.
  • Strengthen South Africa’s position in the global cosmetic and wellness markets through plant-based solutions grounded in indigenous heritage.

Focus Areas

The initiative emphasises:

  • Indigenous plants with applications in skincare and wellness.
  • Knowledge-based innovations rooted in South Africa’s biodiversity and cultural practices.
  • Cosmeceutical, skincare, and personal care products that blend modern science with traditional knowledge.

Who Should Apply?

The call is open to the following stakeholders who are actively involved in skin health, cosmetics, and personal care research or product development:

  • Higher Education Institutions (HEIs): Researchers and research groups working on skin health or natural product development.
  • Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs): Companies seeking to scale innovative, indigenous knowledge-based skin care solutions.
  • Industry Partners: Corporates or established businesses in cosmetics, wellness, or related industries interested in collaboration.
  • Indigenous Knowledge-Holders: Individuals or communities with valuable knowledge of traditional remedies and formulations.

Application Process

Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest and confirm that:

  • They hold IP derived from publicly funded R&D.
  • The IP is based on South African indigenous plants or indigenous knowledge.
  • They are open to commercialisation through licensing, assignment, or related pathways.
