The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development, through its JIX LAUNCHPAD initiative, has announced a fully funded programme for young gig economy entrepreneurs. This four-week programme is designed to help freelancers, creators, and service providers transform their informal work into formal, sustainable enterprises.
Programme Details and Focus
This initiative targets young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35 who are already earning an income from gig work. Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum covering business foundations, client acquisition, personal branding, and scaling strategies .
The programme is delivered by the Wits Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Braamfontein, offering a mix of in-person workshops and virtual support .
Application and Selection
Applications are open until 15 July 2026. Prospective participants must be South African citizens or permanent residents living in Johannesburg and must commit to attending at least 70% of the sessions .
Priority will be given to women-owned businesses, township-based enterprises, and applicants with disabilities.
Four-Week Curriculum and Impact
The programme structure includes weekly modules on business foundations, sales, digital branding, and a final week on funding readiness. Participants will develop a comprehensive toolkit including a business plan, financial tracker, marketing content, and a pitch deck .
The experience culminates in a Demo Day where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to funders and ecosystem partners.
Strategic Support and Ecosystem
The programme offers a minimum of six one-on-one mentor touchpoints, virtual business clinics, and peer support . It aims to connect participants to funding pathways through entities like the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller (GEP), SEDA, and the DTIC.
