About the Spaza Shop Support Fund
The R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund was launched in April 2025 by the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition . Administered jointly by SEDFA and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF), the fund aims to formalise and strengthen South African-owned spaza shops in townships and rural areas .
The fund provides a combination of grants and interest-free loans capped at R100,000 per qualifying recipient, covering:
- R40,000 for stock purchases
- R50,000 for assets and infrastructure upgrades
- R10,000 for business skills development and training
To date, 2,369 businesses have been approved for support, with 43% being women-owned enterprises.
