Are you a South African tech entrepreneur building solutions that solve real-world problems? The SA Tech Challenge 2025 is officially open — and it’s offering one of the largest innovation prize pools in the country’s history, with R3 million in total funding and a top prize of R1 million for the grand winner.
Organised by the Department of Science and Innovation and the Department of Small Business Development, this challenge is part of South Africa’s participation in the G20 Digital Innovation Alliance (G20-DIA). It aims to spotlight high-impact digital innovations that address development needs — from farming and healthcare to financial access and data security.
What’s at Stake?
Six category winners will be selected to represent South Africa at the G20-DIA Summit in Cape Town, where they’ll compete for the following national prizes:
- 1st place: R1 million
- 2nd place: R750,000
- 3rd place: R500,000
- 4th–6th place: R250,000 each
In addition to funding, winners will receive:
- Tailored support packages from key stakeholders
- Exposure to global markets and access to international investors
- The opportunity to showcase their solution on the G20 global stage
Who Can Apply?

The SA Tech Challenge is open to South African Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that meet the following criteria:
- Stage: Must be post-revenue and operational for at least 1 year
- Size: Fewer than 250 employees and annual turnover under R250 million
- Readiness: Tech solution must be at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7 or above (i.e., tested and implemented in real-world environments)
- Registration: Must be CIPC-registered, tax-compliant, and have audited financials for the past 2 years
- Ownership: The business must be South African-owned and headquartered
- Impact: Must align with at least one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Challenge Categories
Applicants must choose one category that best aligns with their solution. The six eligible categories are:
- Digital Platforms: Scalable platform-based solutions that connect users, close market gaps, and create digital ecosystems. Ideal for innovations that serve underserved communities and promote digital inclusion.
- FinTech: Financial technologies that improve financial access, inclusion, and management — particularly for underserved populations. Solutions must demonstrate regulatory compliance, security, and the ability to scale.
- Secured Digital Infrastructure: Tools that strengthen cybersecurity, protect user data, and improve system resilience — especially for MSMEs with limited access to enterprise-grade security resources. Includes innovations in digital ID, data encryption, and fraud prevention.
- Circular Economy: Technologies that enable reuse, recycling, and regeneration of materials or products. Solutions must address environmental challenges (e.g., waste reduction, upcycling) while offering measurable business value.
- Innovations for Connectivity: Digital tools that expand access to the internet and smart devices. Includes solutions that enhance network infrastructure, make telecommunications more affordable, or use IoT to improve digital access in underserved areas.
- Innovations for Development: Impact-driven tech solutions in agriculture, healthcare, or education. Innovations should improve productivity, access, or service delivery while offering measurable social and economic outcomes.
