Smallholder farmers with a passion for commercial potato production are invited to apply for the Potatoes South Africa Enterprise Development Programme. This four-year initiative is designed to help new potato producers establish sustainable farming operations, improve their production systems, and build viable commercial enterprises.
About the Programme

Potatoes South Africa (Potatoes SA) is committed to supporting the growth of smallholder farmers in the potato industry. The programme aims to:
- Develop a sustainable economic model for smallholder potato farming.
- Promote the use of available land and encourage integrated production systems.
- Enable smallholder farmers to grow their operations into commercial-scale potato producers.
How the Programme Works
The programme offers a phased support structure over four years:
- Year 1: 100% seed funding and full mentorship support.
- Years 2–4: Support decreases gradually, down to 25% by the fourth year as farmers gain independence.
- Farmers are encouraged to expand their operations to at least 30 hectares.
- A third support cycle may be available for further expansion, depending on the farmer’s progress.
What Support Includes:
- Financial aid for pre-feasibility studies, seed funding, and mentor remuneration.
- Exposure to industry events and networking opportunities.
- Hands-on support from experienced mentors and potato production experts.
Key Benefits for Farmers
- Achieve economies of scale, reducing costs and improving access to services.
- Increased farm visits by support agencies, improving skills transfer and farm management.
- Cost savings on travel and logistics, allowing funds to be used more effectively.
- Continuous access to specialised support to develop essential farming knowledge and skills.
- Improved supplier relationships, making it easier to access inputs and markets.
Role of Mentors

Each participant will receive mentorship from industry experts and experienced commercial farmers. Mentors will assist with:
- Planning: Helping farmers prepare for the season and monitor progress.
- Farm operations: Providing technical advice, identifying training needs, and transferring skills.
